Electroencephalography (EEG)

Measures brain activity

EEG (electroencephalography) measures the brain's electrical activity in real time through electrodes placed on the scalp. The technique captures precisely how people respond to advertising, products, digital experiences or physical environments, giving a unique view into how decisions are made.

Our flagship device: Enobio 8

En Databrain we use the Neuroelectrics Enobio 8, a state-of-the-art EEG system that stands out for its accuracy, portability and ease of use.
Key technical specifications
  • 8 recording channels on the international 10-20 standard.
  • 500 Hz sampling rate and a 0–125 Hz frequency range.
  • High resolution (24-bit) with noise < 1 µV RMS.
  • Wireless (Wi-Fi) or USB connectivity, for mobile or lab studies.
  • Rechargeable battery, up to 6 hours over Wi-Fi and up to 20 hours over USB.
  • Fast setup with dry electrodes (1–2 minutes), cutting preparation time and maximizing efficiency in the field.

What can EEG measure in marketing and UX?

Sustained attention and distractionin response to stimuli.
Cognitive loadhow much effort it takes to process a message or an experience.
Emotional processinghow the brain reacts automatically, before any conscious response.
Memorabilitywhich stimuli are most likely to be remembered.
UX research responsesvalidating interfaces, navigation and digital experience at a level of detail no other metric reaches.
Emotional valence and motivationwhether a stimulus draws people in or pushes them away, derived from frontal alpha asymmetry.
Arousal, or emotional activationthe intensity of the affective response to a brand, asset or experience, regardless of whether it is positive or negative.
Event-related potentials (ERPs)the exact brain response to a single stimulus — a logo, a price, a word — revealing recognition, surprise or message congruence within milliseconds.
Millisecond temporal resolutionthe exact moment in a video or journey where attention and emotion rise or fall, in a detail eye-tracking alone cannot reach.

Analysis capabilities

From raw recording to actionable metrics: how we handle the EEG signal end to end.

Signal capture and export

Record, visualize, analyze and export the raw EEG signal, ready for deeper work.

Device indicators

Real-time monitoring of battery, signal quality and per-electrode impedance during recording.

Built-in quality control

Tools that validate recording quality before and during the study, so noisy data is discarded.

Automatic signal processing

Automatic computation of frontal asymmetry and power spectral density (power spectral density).

Inter-subject correlation

Also called neural synchrony: it compares brain activity across participants to see how similar their response to the same stimulus is.

Stimulus synchronization

Precise time markers that align the EEG signal with what the participant sees, millisecond by millisecond.

Frequently asked questions

What is EEG (electroencephalography)?
EEG records the brain's electrical activity through electrodes placed on the scalp. That activity appears as waves at different frequencies, depending on the brain region and the task the person is performing.
What is EEG used for in marketing and UX?
It measures the brain's electrical activity to study the cognitive and emotional processes behind behavior — attention, cognitive load, emotional activation, engagement and memorability — before any conscious, stated response. That is how an asset, an interface or an experience gets validated with neurophysiological evidence.
How long does an EEG study take?
As long as the participant's exposure to the stimulus. Behavioral studies usually take under half an hour; EEG records continuously while the person views the content or completes the task.
Is EEG invasive or uncomfortable for participants?
No. It is completely non-invasive: electrodes simply rest on the scalp. With the Enobio 8 and its dry electrodes, setup takes just 1–2 minutes, allowing recording in comfortable, close-to-real conditions.
How does EEG differ from facial coding or GSR?
EEG measures the brain's electrical activity directly; facial coding reads facial expressions, and GSR measures physiological activation through the skin. They are complementary: together they give a complete reading of attention and emotion.
